Intro to Off Road Riding

$139.00

This is a 2.5hr clinic for beginner who are interested in learning to ride off road or mountain bike. This is for those who have little or no experience riding on single track mountain bike trails and limited or no experience on gravel.

It is also suited to all fitness levels.

If you’re feeling nervous, overly cautious or worried about riding off road, this is the clinic for you. It is a skills based program (i.e does not require lots of trail riding) and if you can ride a bike in a straight line- you can do it!

This clinic will cover bike check, bike set up, starting and stopping safely, basic braking, understanding gears, body position, slow speed control and basic cornering.

The skills covered in this clinic will give you confidence in yourself and your bike, and set you up to move onto the full Dirt Maidens Foundational Skills Series if you are interested. This will enable you to ride confidently on fire trails, progressing to easy green mountain bike trails.

This session is conducted in an open grassy area at UC Stromlo Forest Park and possibly a small section of single track mtb trail depending on the skills of the group.

FAQs

  1. Can I ride an e-bike?
Yes! The use of E-bikes or power-assisted pedal cycles (Pedalec) which are vehicles complying with the requirements of European Standard EN 15194: 2009 or EN 15194:2009+A1:2009: ‘Cycles – Electrically power assisted cycles – EPAC Bicycles’ are permitted within UCSFP.

    To comply with EN 15194:

    The motor must be electric.

The maximum continuous power output of the motor cannot exceed 250 watts measured at the wheel. Note: A motor that delivers 250 watts of continuous power can produce greater power for very short periods of time, which can be beneficial when pulling away at traffic lights or starting a hill climb.

The rider must pedal the cycle to activate the motor.

The motor must cut-off once the vehicle reaches 25 km/h, or sooner if the rider stops pedalling

The vehicle must be certified by the manufacturer and labelled as complying with EN 15194. The label must include the manufacturer’s name, the motor’s cut-off speed in km/h and its continuous rated power in watts.
E-bikes or Pedalecs must only be used on the UC Stromlo mountain bike trail network and are not permitted on the criterium circuit.

  2. Do you have a bike I can hire?
YES!! We now have a Small Frame dual suspension bike for hire (Norco Fluid). This is suitable for riders 155cm-165cm tall for $75 for the session. Please email
info@dirtmaidens.com.au if you’d like to hire this bike.
Cycle City at Stromlo rents out full suspension bikes ($110 per half day).
Trek Fyshwick have e-bikes for hire for $149 for a full day (pick up and drop off at Fyshwick store).

  3. Do I need to be super fit to do this?
No, but more fitness will allow you to enjoy it more.

  4. Will I crash?
Hopefully not. But mountain biking is an inherently dangerous sport and there are many risks involved, including risk to yourself, to your property and to others.
We operate under a robust risk management process however riders do still crash. We provide first aid where required and will support you to assess what happened and keep riding if you wish to.
In this clinic, we are mostly on an open area and will only progress to short sections of mountain bike trail (less than 200m) if riders are comfortable.
